Dmitri Shostakovich
(1906–1975)
Shostakovich's most famous opera, "Lady Macbeth of Minsk" is a violent love story set in provincial Russia.
It scandalised the Soviet authorities at the time of its premier and he later produced a censored version, Katerina Ismailova.
The original now stands as one of the most performed operatic works of the 20th century.
