Claude Debussy

Claude Debussy

(1862–1918)

Debussy's single opera "Pelléas et Mélisande" is a key work in 20th century music drama.

In many ways it is an "anti-opera", as it contains little conventional singing or action of the type audiences at the première had come to expect.

Debussy used subtle orchestration to create an elusive, dream-like atmosphere, which either has the power to fascinate or repel listeners today.
