Gluck was a key figure in transforming Baroque into Classical opera, thereby paving the way for Mozart.
Both Berlioz and Wagner acknowledge a debt to him.
In his reform operas such as "Orfeo ed Euridice" he sought to emphasise the drama rather than just the musical virtuosity for its own sake.
