Johan Botha

(Born on August 19, 1965 in Rustenburg, South Africa- died September 8, 2016)

Johan Botha was a South African born tenor.
At five years of age he told his father he wanted to be an opera singer and by age ten he was already taking voice lessons.

He made his debut as Max in Der Freischütz in 1989 at the Municipal Theatre in Roodepoort.

His big international break came in 1993 at the Opéra de la Bastille in Paris when he sang Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly.

Since then he has sung in many of the worlds leading opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Opera Australia, Royal Opera House (London), La Scala, and the Salzburg Festival. He currently lives in Vienna, Austria.

Johan Botha sang all the big tenor roles from Andrea Chenier, Tannhauser, Tristan and Otello in an ever expanding repertoire- he also had a growing discography that includes The Jungle Book - Charles Koechlin (1994) The Puccini Experience (1995) Tristan und Isolde (1995) Elektra (1996) Taillefer - Richard Strauss (1998) Italian Arias (2001) Stabat Mater - Dvořák (2001) Tiefland - Bertrand de Billy (2006)

He was also part of a filmed Die Walküre and Der Meistersinger in Bayreuth both of which are available on DVD.
