Hildegard Behrens was a German soprano with a wide repertory that included Wagner, Weber, Mozart, Richard Strauss, and Alban Berg roles
In 76 while rehearsing Wozzeck, she was "discovered" by Herbert von Karajan, who was then looking for his new Salome. She was summoned to Berlin to audition and she played the role at the 1977 Salzburg Festival.
Hildegard Behrens enjoyed a major career playing many significant performances and making numerous recordings and films.
Her Tosca at the Metropolitan is available on DVD as is her Brunhilde in the Metropolitan Ring Cycle.
She died suddenly and unexpectedly just before she was to sing scheduled performances in Tokyo Japan.
